With Clark out of town for last night's FHE, I decided to go with something a little more self indulgent....like forcing my love for organization on my children! Mwahahaha. Come on, you know they loved it. Probably just not as much as me.
We have our very first (and certainly not the last) Sock and Underwear Drawer Organizing Party! I feel like there should be balloons and streamers. Cue the confetti canon (and then clean it up please.)
In recent months I have noticed an increasing number of socks landing themselves in the "sock orphanage". Remembering how much I hated digging through the "sock basket" as a child, I decided that we would give ourselves a chance to reunite sock pairs to the best of our ability and then "dispose" of the leftovers. I don't do "sock baskets".
Was it wrong to show so much underwear on the internet?

Before:
Please control your gasps of disbelief. The chaos, OH! the chaos. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
The "During":
Thoroughly entertaining, as always.
Since I put away most of Hazel's clothes (thus keeping her sock and underwear drawer in a constant state of order), she was free to choose her own activity while we worked...which mainly included her making faces in the mirror in her underwear.
After:
I know, the difference is astounding right? Tell me the difference is astounding.
In any case, there was much cause to rejoice [hooray!] in the reuniting of sock orphans with their perfect matches and everyone will be able to find socks and underwear with ease each day (in theory.)
And no more of this....though honestly, it warms my heart to see it because this is soooo Abby. Where fashion is concerned, she really just doesn't care. Where Haley has a love for getting dressed and trying new looks, Abby begrudges the fact that she has to wear anything at all.

Part II:
The Cherry Blossoms have arrived.
So did snow on Sunday morning.
The poor blossoms and daffodils are all wilting and hanging on for dear life through our 30 degree weather this week.
I would like to wring the little groundhog's neck right about now.
Part III:
Yesterday I sat on the couch in the front room to watch Mia outside. She desperately wanted to ride her bike but no one would go outside into the frigid Spring air to play with her (including her mother.) So I sat watching her play happily. When she made a turn by the car I saw her reach down and lovingly pat her bike like a horse. It warmed my heart and I wished, just for a moment, that I was my 6 year old self out there riding our horses together.

I rejoice in the blessed organization along with you. Hooray, indeed! Last week I threw away all of my H and O's socks. They wear the same size, so I bought a big pack of white socks and voila! No excuses for not being able to match (the boys') socks around here! No sock orphans. They are all "swingers", if you will. They don't care who their partner is, because they all match each other!
I loved 6-year-old you. Maybe that is why I love your girls so much. <3
A sock drawer organizing party. You are absolutely brilliant! I'm inspired...but not enough to actually DO anything about it because it would force me to actually confront that nightmare lurking in my children' drawers...and I'm all about denial right now. The results were astounding...and Mia on her "horse" is darling...we seem to be having a bit of a "horse" streak in our family right now. For a family who has never had a horse or even a close relationship with one, we seem to mention "horse" things alot. (See Papa's letter last week where he got his fur brushed and hooves cleaned!)
I love a good organizing party. You are nice to help. I usually just dump the unmatched socks in front of my oldest and bribe her to match at least 40. I'm a good mother like that.
Speaking of underwear, I have a picture to post too. Better go get that done.
I want to play with Mia right now in your cute family neighborhood. It looks nice from that small sliver I can see.
And I love that Hazel wanders wildly like Helen Keller while everyone else works. Cleaning around here is Cubby doing everything and Boo sort of wandering...the sock basket...where socks go to die. But I love that we have that in our memories--and sock folding parties. I want to ask Mo if that sock basket was ever LESS full after a folding party. I'm pretty sure sock basket socks make babies instead.
Deep sigh of satisfaction. I love organizing stuff like this too. It's so rewarding. I like the sock orphanage. :) Funny name for that darn pile of things.
Sorry about the sock basket thing. That is the difference between you and me. You are ruthless at throwing things away and I have a very hard time doing it. I used to truly believe that sometime, somewhere, the mates to all those socks would show up! They never did. I finally threw them all away when you guys left for college, I guess. I have always admired your organizational skills. You are a pro! Love the horse riding girl. She is so sweet! The funny thing about Dad's horse grooming story is something I didn't mention. After little Lena brushed him and cleaned his hooves, the very last thing she did was give him a big pat on the rump! Everyone in the room about died laughing. I suspect that will be a great family story as she grows up--the day she whapped the temple president on the rear!
We once had a sock box and religiously i would take it out and reunite its members until I actually became acquainted with the singles left in the box and as much as I took care of them-I finally threw them away. It gave me great freedom. Love you!
My kids will unmatch their socks and put mismatched ones on. But only when we will have to be taking their shoes off in public. Also, my sock pile is larger than the socks that make it into drawers and it's only been collecting for 2 months. Grrr. Maybe we should have your FHE next week.
I love organized sock & undie drawers. 'Tis true.
I also love cherry blossoms.
What a happy post!
i wish i were there to see the cherry blossoms! i think it is funny that you "threw up in your mouth" because it is totally a normal scene for me. you would be very disappointed of the disarray that i call my girls room. clothes everywhere. i started to make piles of moving some clothes out and some clothes in, then didn't finish and now it is out of control.
