Crispy, crunchy Fall and my rose colored sunglasses

When we drive down the road I literally cannot contain by amazement and excitement over the explosion of Autumn leaves. The girls have taken to yelling "fire tree" when they see one with equaled enthusiasm. And to make everything seem even a tad more breathtaking, my sunglasses have a rosy tint to them which makes all of the leaves look a shade or two more vibrant and alive, if that is at all possible.
Did you know that those amazing fall colors are the true colors of the leaves, unmasked by Spring's deluge of chlorophyll...sometimes when I drive down the road I am thinking of this and feeling happy that all of these trees get to show their true selves for a few precious weeks....and then I start singing my best Cindy Lauper "True Colors"....I see your true colors shining through, I see your true colors and that's why I love you so don't be afraid, to let them shoooowww, your true colors are beautiful...like a rainnnnbowww..doo doo doo dah doo....I'm sorry, I've gone off on a tangent and now I'm lost in the 80's (there may be no coming back, and would that be so terrible?)...anyway, where was I? Oh, Volvos.
If I thought we would be here for an extended period of time we might have to build a stone wall and buy a Volvo station wagon. I love New England and this time of year is precisely why.
Today we anxiously awaited Clark home from a day and a half of duty, did our chores with speed (ie slightly sloppy) and enthusiasm (ie a smidgen of nagging and a threat or two) and set off for a family outing to celebrate Autumn in Connecticut.
First stop, a well preserved and active steam powered cider mill. We watched them squish the juice out of thousands of unsuspecting apples and then took the girls pictures in front of a truck load of macintosh. While we were standing in line to buy our Maple Moose suckers, apple butter and hot mulled apple cider with caramel we lamented the fact that we cannot have it all...besides the fact that I just made it sound like we were buying it all. Then we topped of the day with a trip to the Apple Orchard for a very large bag of hand picked delight and a carton of raspberries (the wait for the wagon ride pushed us beyond patience...after an hour...) and we opted to close the day with a little pasta and ice cream.

Clark and I feel indeed lucky to have loved every place that we have lived. However, with the possibility of ending this nomadic Navy lifestyle, we are saddened that we cannot live somewhere that has all of what we love. This is what I propose...a state in the Union that can provide us with all of the following:
1. Springtime in Texas...perfect weather and Rodeo season with a downtown that includes a place much like Pike's Place Market in Seattle
2. A Cape Cod summer...a little sand nearby, classy, warm, quaint, and a little preppy
3. A New England Fall...crispy, crunchy, the smell of mulled apple cider with caramel...and the leaves, my gosh, the leaves
4. And anywhere that has a short lived winter...let's say, four weeks of brisk weather, two mild blizzards providing us with two to three school "snow days", hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and free heat.

Welcome to our conundrum. About two years ago we started seriously studying for our next stop. I thought it would be hard to narrow down all the fabulous places to live. You'd think of 50 states at least half a dozen would be perfect. I don't get why I can't have a ski resort 15 minutes away, the ocean or a lake 5 minutes away, and a pool in the backyard of my affordable mini-mansion. I think we should be able to design our own states.

we totally went and picked apples today. We bought apple butter and enjoyed the amazing Virginia fall colors. The trees change a bit after y'alls, but the morphing has begun. I didn't know that about their true colors. Interesting. We will be seeing you guys soon, so make sure there are still good trees to take great pictures in front of!

ps- those bright bright red trees are JAPANESE maples. Make sure your girls link how cool those trees are with their auntie.

I also really love New England in the fall. It is unparalleled. Goodness I wish I could hop on a plane right now for the northeast.

Thanks for the photo essay, it will have to satisfy my autumn in New England longings.

The northeast really is beautiful having just returned from New Hampshire I can say that with conviction. It is so beautiful.

Dad and I will definately move to the state you describe. It sounds perfect. You make me miss New England. It truly takes the breath away at times. It's snowing tonight here in Utah--go figure. At least we don't have to shovel a steep driveway in the morning!

What a perfectly lovely fall day. It was beautiful because it was my birfday... Thanks for the call and the song!

I envy your Connecticut fall. I think our Fall came and went in about a week. Last week it was 90 degrees and it snowed this weekend. I'm going to need to switch my favorite season if I continue to live here.

Your family is so fun. You enjoy every moment. I love all that you and Clark do with your kids. They will have such amazing memories.

Please take me to that wonderful place that has all the perfect elements combined...But I would also take fall year round--would it be unspecial then? The true colors thing might be a great analogy for YW (or anyone, really). I'll have to ponder that one. I want to play with you guys!

those pictures are beautiful! I love fall! We just went out and made our first snowman of the season! I think fall will come back to us though...that is the way it goes in Utah. I wish we could come visit and see all the beauty!

I agree I wish I could have a little of everywhere I've lived. There is nothing quite like driving through Pennsylvania. There has to be some of that landscape, too.

You will have to tell me about this cidar place. The real estate agent when we were looking here told us about it, but I have forgotten the details and wanted to go this year.

I had a Japanese Maple in my front yard in NC. I totally miss it, although not so much now that I am seeing New England in the fall.

Oh...I DO love fall! It is the most spectacular, divine, yummy season of them all. I can't get enough...and I feel physical pain that I'm not at your house in CT enjoying every wonderful red leaf with you. What a spectacular day you had! I love my Scharmans!

I love that! We missed our apple picking here but the leaves are just starting to change. If you find that perfect state in the union, let me know and we'll join you! What beautiful pictures.

I'm thinking you need to go to the mountains of North or South Carolina! I've pretty much decided that this is the ideal place for such described weather (Hilton Head is a great substitute for Cape Cod)!

i do wish that texas had more of a fall here. instead, we have two seasons: hot and not so hot. i do love the mild winters here and would miss the thunderstorms. what a fun outing to the apple place! your kids are so cute and little hazel is so old! such a cute family!

Wow!!!!!! What a contrast to what we have going on in Utah right now! Utah has sort of skipped apple season. Everyone has been scrambling to get them off their trees because of our COLD, stormy weather! I miss New England falls. . .

I will happily come live with you when you find that place. Just let us know.

I've been so busy with moving prep (in Madrid hotel room right now), I've taken little time to stop and smell the cider. I love fall too, so thanks for reminding me to enjoy it before it's time for snowflakes. Trees are still green in Madrid, so maybe we'll get to enjoy two falls, at home and abroad.

I would love to live in that place you described.
By the way, where did you get that cute knitted beanie. I have been looking for those.

Are you and Martha Stewart next door neighbors, or just the best of friends? :) What a truly DIVINE description of Autumn in New England!

And what with global warming and all... you just may get everything you've ever dreamed of in one place (except for the "classy" part, because hey, there is only so much natural disasters can do...)

Love the leaves.. love the beanies.. (don't love that it looks like the truck of apples is gonna tip over and crush your DARLING girls!) but it all sounds absolutely delightful.
P.S. Why do you know how to spell chlorophyll??
