**Please still be my friend after this post.Shame on you Stephenie Meyer for exploiting the girls and women of the world...for dangling the string of superficial fantasies in front of all our faces.
I have to admit, last summer I was there to buy her book the day it hit the stands. I am a hypocrite to write any of this because I am 3/4 of the way through Breaking Dawn and will finish it with some semblance of delight. HOWEVER, I refuse to neglect the rest of my life to do it. Last year I made sure that I was all caught up and everything so that I could sit and read the entire day and not do anything else (save lunchtime when I threw some crackers and apples to my kids.) So this time, I refuse to give in. I will do my laundry and dishes first today, and then read when I have an empty moment. If any of you happen to bump into Miss Meyers, you tell you I don't appreciate the hype she has created.
[enter mild sarcasm wherever necessary]
I have decided, while reading this book, that I do not like fantasy...never been a fan of "the romance novel" or girlish fantasies. And I don't appreciate her making me think that's what I want...When I put down the book I have to shake those "taken away in the book" feelings. I don't like them...it feels icky.
This is why this book is silly and why I am mad that I like to read it:
*It's about vampires...every time I stop to explain something to my husband I can't say anything with a straight face..."and then...the vampire fights the werewolf...and Bella, she's so cool..."
*The main character is just a normal girl like you and me but she is undyingly adored and "worshiped" by two men...not one but two.
*The men that can't live without her, both of them, are handsome and perfect.
*She is beautiful, naturally.
*Edward is also unearthly beautiful, and has rock hard abs ("marble hard" to be exact)
*She ends up with someone filthy rich...money is no object.
*Since when is drinking blood not totally and absolutely thoroughly disgusting and wrong?
*She has a picture perfect wedding where she is the center of attention when she doesn't want to be...what a martyr.
*She honeymoons on a private island off of Brazil with a hot guy...complete with four poster bed draped in white billowy netting.
*She has a baby, how nice.
*She not only lives but then SHE gets the perfect body with all sorts of superhuman abilities and everyone is impressed with her control.
(that's about as far in the book I am)
On a less sarcastic note, this is why I sincerely don't like the book so far:
*I am rather bothered by all the imprinting of little girls going on...it's a bit creepy in my mind.
*I hate hate hate how she treats Jacob and Edward. It makes me like her less and less that she strings them both along in the manner that she does AND they stay around because they just can't help themselves.
*It is taking her 700+ pages to tell a 300 page story.
*Her young adult fiction has morphed into something that she couldn't contain in that category.
*I hate that I like reading these books.
They are silly and that really all I have to say about that.

She's adored by handsome men? What's so fantastical about that? Every girl I have ever dated has been adored by one of the best looking men on the face of the planet.
I also had a hard time getting into the book. By page 94 I knew the plot of the story, and I did not want it to happen. I did finally within the last 200 pages really get into the book and had a hard time putting it down. I thought it was a good book, not great!
Oh come on, you guys. I just decided to quit fighting the improbability of the whole senario and go with flow. It is a romantic fantasy, okay? I had been a bit put off by the end of the last one but I think this one redeemed itself. Are there things that disturb me a little? OF COURSE!!! It's about murderous vampires and werewolfs people! I still wouldn't encourage a young teen to read this series but I have to admit, I read this last one in two days and enjoyed it quite a bit! Luckily, I got a bad cold and was laying in bed sick so I didn't have to feel guilty about everything I should have been doing. Maybe the publishing industry needs a new catagory in books--something for OLD young adults and sappy housewives. All in all I think it was a satisfying conclusion to a strange but interesting story.
Not that I would have anyway, but I am for sure not reading any of these books now.... like, ever!
I liked this one better than 2 and 3 in the series. If you aren't finished by Sunday, I will tell you how it ends (yes, that is a threat.)
I'm only on page 273...does that mean I have to read the whole book before I read this post and comments? I didn't read the post, but from the title, I take it you aren't happy. I may not finish for a few days...so I guess I'll read your post then.
What?! You mean we all can't have perfect supermodel bodies just two days after having a baby?! Dang false expectations!!! haha...I loved this post. So true, so true. BTW...I'm a friend of Kara B. :) My blog is at www.xanga.com/kissacooper
I was going to boycott the rest of the series after book three, then somehow the book ended up in my cart at Costco last week. . . I don't know how it happened. Guess I'll have to read it now.
At least you read it with a semblance of delight, I hardly could stomach it. I finished it hoping that somehow she (SM) would redeem herself at the end, but no such luck!! If you would like to read my complaints go check out my blog!
I know. I'm so embarrassed that I like these books. And even more embarrassed that I have two friends to discuss them with me. I also wondered how she could think she was totally average and no one noticed her in Phoenix but the entire school was falling at her feet in Washington. I never got that when I moved into a new school.
I read all 3 in 7 days. Are you saying that was a bad thing? Try reading The Host next. It will trump dishes too.
I have no self control. The house is a wreck, I haven't been getting any sleep, kids are neglected, and for what? I had to finish the book as fast as I could (less than 2 days) just so I could move on with my life. While I thought it ended well, the FIRST 500 PAGES, left me disappointed. I finished it this afternoon, so I'm ready to move on. I don't remember much about it -not sure if it's because I read most of it in the wee hours of the night, or it just wasn't all that memorable. I wouldn't say any of the books are wonderful, but for some reason I can not put them down. Thank goodness this is the last one. Way to keep your ground only reading when you have time for it. You're a much stronger woman than I.
I totally agree with you on both lists. I loved the first book and then have liked each subsequent book less and less. I actually read the last chapter of Breaking Dawn and had my friend feel me in on everything that happened before I started reading so I wouldn't get sucked in and then feel yucky and guilty for 2 days after. I'm done with the series...really done. Now what?
I'm a little upset with you because i thought you were posting this after you read the book and that you were saying "shame on you" for the outcome and I was reading all worried that i wouldn't like the outcome b/c you didn't and read with those thoughts in my head...shame you you, emma jo.
at least i finished the dang book and can start cleaning my house now. i liked the book, i don't get why people relate it to their own lives...IT'S A BOOK OF FICTION! I thought it was kinda cool that two men were vying for her love, not jealous in the least.
