you see this? i'm waving the white flag.

Directions: Take this post with a grain of salt...and then get back to me in three months.
We just got back from a delightful weekend trip to Washington D.C. to visit Spencer and Sho and celebrate the 4th of July in our Nation's capital. (Thanks to Spencer and Sho for the awesome pictures they took this weekend--I just wanted updated family pics to prove we had a new baby.) We drove there on Thursday night thus rendering the children unconscious for nearly the entire trip (an 8 hour drive once you add traffic through NYC and Philly, even when done in the middle of the night). Clark's brother Nolan (a good friend of my little bro) came with us and endured most of the trip with these little people in the back of the mini van...bonding with the girls. Needless to say, Nolan will not be having children anytime soon. But he was a champ right up through the last hour to home last night, holding the binky in the mouth of a crying baby and being poked by Abby's feet through his headrest, all to the chorus of cranky, whiny kids. I don't understand it...we invited him to stay for ice cream but he nimbly lept from our car into his truck upon pulling in the driveway. No doubt in a rush to get home to his bottle of Advil and quiet apartment.
It really was a fun trip. We watched the fireworks from the lawn on the mall right between the Washington monument and the reflecting pool. The show was spectacular...honestly the most amazing I've ever seen...even through the rain that we had on and off all day. The kids were troopers and loved it too! A totally good time.
HOWEVER, the point of this post is to share with all of you that I am losing my mind. Do you know that song "I'm going slightly mad?" I can't even remember who sings it though I can picture him in my head. But that shouldn't surprise you because I truly am losing all ability to recall basic information like what day it is, my children's names and how to form a coherent sentence. When I talk to people I feel like someone is poking a quadrant of my brain with a probe...my speech actually slurs on occasion while thinking of what words to use. It's a little embarrassing. This weekend in DC I experienced a first. We went to visit a cousin that I haven't seen in quite some time. We got to the door and said Hellos. It wasn't until I was going through my line up introducing little people that I realized we had left the baby in the car. Look, she was only 30 feet away and it had only been a minute but between three older kids and five adults that had gotten out of that car, she had been left behind. In my defense we were still trying to calm a fight between the older girls...someone bit someone else and Hazel had fallen into a peaceful and quiet sleep on the ride over. Then on Sunday I walked out the door and made it to church only to realize 25 minutes into the meeting that I had completely neglected to bring any kind of diaper bag. Nothing. Just forgot it altogether. Tonight while on the phone with my sister I started to tell her a story. I suppose I was filling in too many details and totally forgot the point of the story...right in the middle...even sitting here now I still can't remember, for the life of me, what I was going to tell her.
I was talking to my sister in law a few weeks ago and we were talking about this "transitional time" with a new baby. We were talking about how long it takes us to feel "normal" again. Do you know how long its been since I went the extra mile to make something really cute? or really fun? Case in point, Clark's Father's Day gift was given to him in a plastic Target bag. No cute card, nothing. I just don't have it in me. I've been in survival mode since Hazel was born. Granted we had a lot going on all at once. I have to keep reminding myself what I have said every time I've had a baby before--give it 6 months. It always takes me 6 months to get totally back into my groove. I can do the day to day stuff...I just don't have anything beyond that in me. So I keep telling myself over and over something that my sister in law's friend told her. It's great and very true. She said
"just put your hair in a ponytail. It's not your time. It will be your time again soon."
There is a light at the end of this greasy haired tunnel. Just try to avoid expecting anything cute or creative from me for another 2 months and 28 days. You can expect a lot more incoherent sentences, miscounted plates at the dinner table, keys locked in cars, half constructed blogging pages, random papers strewn about the house and little girls without shoes.
It's just not my time and that totally sucks.
(So my bro and sis in law took all the cool photos but I get to claim the one of Hazel...it makes me feel happier about this post.)

Ah, I felt like I was right there with you as I read...wait...
It's like I said, if each progressive child takes a part of your brain away, I'm officially 2 times smarter than you at the present time. Does that rub salt in your greasy wound? I love the wuote about not your time. It's not mine right now either, and even though I had not articulated that point, I've known it for a little while, and I've taken comfort in knowing it's temporary...And as soon as I get my groove back it'll be time for kid number three and let the process begin again. I'm exhausted!

I'm right there with you! Minus two kids. Love the quote from your sister-in-law's friend. I'll have to remember that when I have a down day, or when I'm one the edge of a mom melt down. I LOVE the pictures that Spencer took...Mia's face is great in the first one.

I am so glad that someone else is going through EXACTLY what I have been going through, except it has hit me with child number 3. I have seriously been driving in my car and I turn around to make sure I brought the baby with me, I cannot even recall putting her in the van. She's 8 months old and I don't think it is getting any easier. Please tell me it will get better

The song is wither by Queen or Dr. Dimento... I think. Im so happy you like th pictures. The one you took of hazel very well may be the best shot taken the whole week end. I actually just posted on our blog (a rarity) and upon coming to your post, I see we posted the same exact shots... Well i guess there are only so many to choose from right now. More to come!!

It was so fun having you all here! We miss you all already!!

Don't believe her bloggers. Her house is spotless, her kids are always dressed cute, she's always dressed cute. She's been here a whole month and her whole house is unpacked, organized and decorated. Today she made burp clothes. With ribbons AND buttons. I can't wait to see cute if that's not cute.

I agree on the 6 months though. I have only felt competent about getting things done the past two months. Put away your lists Em and come play with me. We'll add ribbon bows to our days.

Wow, I feel bad, I always take a year to really feel back to my old self. And in twelve years of marriage I have done it 6 times. Plus the 9 months previous of pregnancy. I may no longer have a normal side.

The fact that you just completed a weekend trip, 8 hrs away and watched fireworks late at night, in the rain and survived proves that you are doing better than you think. You all looked adorable when you came to visit and Hazel was in the car for all of 15 seconds by herself. Not bad. I was hoping I'd feel like myself sooner after having 1 baby than I did after having 2, but no matter how long it takes, I guess it's good knowing it doesn't last forever. In the meantime, give yourself a pat on the back and go to bed early next time you get a chance. It really is underrated. I love that picture of Mia with the big leaf on her head. Sounds like you had a great trip, all in all.

I feel your pain, sista'. I think I am just now really getting it all back together again. The only thing it that I'm not used to watch Jameson SO carefully! It's been a while since we had a human vacuum. Here's to a strong immune system! oh, and your girls can't help but be adorable - even on their worst day. There's no such thing as "not cute."

I hear ya, sistah. My hair is in a perma-ponytail. I don't think it remembers how to be "done".

I KNOW.

You are so right.

(How's that for validation?) It's really true. Number 3 kid was hard on me, I'm wondering how I'll do adding number four to the mix.

I'm gearing up for my perma-ponytail.

I absolutely love that quote about the ponytail! My mom has been telling me something similar when I get down about not being able to do some of the things I'd like to be doing.

You could not have a cuter family! What great pictures!

I totally agree with twinlinebackers. Your everyday amazingness of organization, creativity, expression, productiveness....and on and on, is so above me that it's reassuring to hear you too experience survival mode, even if our versions of survival mode are worlds apart (my survival mode does not include making burp cloths). You are amazing! And I love, love, love the picture of Mia -I would have it super dooper sized for the wall.

I'm so homesick for your girls right now...the pictures made me remember why. Considering everything you have been through for the past 3 1/2 months I think you are doing amazingly well. At least you have an excuse for ditz-brain. What's mine? I can't even get my hair into a ponytail so what do I do?

First of all, let me say that is an adorable picture you took of Hazel, and the one of Mia with the leaf is equally cute. I love the family shot, too.

Now, back to the blog post. It is absolutely not 100% true because I just recieved a very cutely decorated package from you for my birthday (which you remember all by yourself) with cute jewels that were wrapped with cute bows. Give yourself some credit. We are all losing our minds and our memories. I like the ponytail quote, but my friend always says, "It's just not my season." As a mother, there is just so much to remember. I'd like to know what kind of car held 5 adults and 4 children.

Love you friend, it was great to talk to you tonight, you didn't even sound all drugged up:)

and wow, 8 hours to DC? I was hoping to hop a train or something this fall when I visit to go see my sil there.

I love the pictures!! I still feel like my mind is gone and Emery is 10 months old. I starting to lose hope that I will ever be back to "normal" (whatever that is?).

How can you have posted this on Tuesday and already have 20 comments? Wow, you have a lot of people that love you! Let me ask you a question you have FOUR children and are loosing your mind? What is my excuse? I only have two and I feel exactly the same way. Although I think there are certain times when Jackson counts as two children. Anyway,I love the pictures!

Your family looks great! Wait a few years and then you will be getting some time for you. My youngest is four. I am finally starting to be able to accomplish a few things during the day. You are great to be able to rebound within six months. It took me four years.

So, I'm thinking it was not a good idea to cut my hair just before having a baby. No ponytail for me. But, I'm a little confused. Do you mean things are supposed to get back to "normal" sometime after having a baby?? I must be doing something wrong. . .

I LOVE the pictures!! And there's no better place to be on July 4th than the Mall in DC!! Your kids are lucky that you're brave enough to face the heat and crowds to take them there!

It's O.K. we have all been there. Everything does not have to be perfect you will make yourself and the the others around you miserable.
Don't sweat the small stuff!
