Between a rock and a hard place.

On Wednesday afternoon I had a rather quick onset of discomfort in my lower back that turned rapidly into an excruciating pain in my lower back and side. After deciding that I couldn't spend the evening on my knees leaning on the couch I called Clark and made him come home from work early to take me to the hospital. I don't think I shall ever squint my eyes again in anger at an ER attending who shuttles people to the back out of turn on account of pain...I have decided there is nothing more miserable than sitting in the emergency room in lots and lots of pain with other people watching.
We were quite lucky though as a friend of ours just happens to work in the ER as a very friendly and accommodating doctor. Once we made our way back (after taking all the kids with us and waiting for Uncle Nolan to come save the day--he picked them up from the hospital, took them home, fed them and put them to bed!) I was taken care of quickly. And eventually, though not soon enough in my opinion, given drugs for the pain. By the way, being asked what my pain was on a scale of 1 to 10 was a more difficult question than normal seeing as how I had a baby just 3 months ago...how could I possible say 10? I typically give them two numbers...Uh, it's like an 8 or a 9...take your pick. Anyway, after a delightful little cat scan I was diagnosed with a kidney stone. A really big one.
I had decided that I would wait to post about this until the stone actually made it's ugly appearance...but after looking at pictures of them on the Internet I decided (for once in my blogging career) that it was too gross to actually show.
7 mm big...that's 1/4 inch for those of you without a ruler handy. That's awfully big in my opinion to have to travel where it travels. We decided though to make the best of it and consider this the son we may never have.
Clark and I haven't settled on a name yet- though we have been considering either Rocky or Stone Philips. My Dad thinks that we should wait and see what he looks like first. I apologized to Clark that I pulled him away from studying that night. He teased me that I was just hard pressed for a date and I decided that any date that ends with Morphine was well worth it.
I have exceeded my pain quota for the year. A baby and a kidney stone is too much...though now that I have said that out loud I might be inviting some kind of horrid bowel disease. I pledge that if I have to put my feet up in stirrups at a doctor's visit one more time this year I might kick someone, hard.
I really was grateful for the doctor that took care of me (I was quite a nuisance and called him at home before deciding to go into the ER...I bothered him with work before he had to go to work, not nice.) Not only did we get excellent medical care and friendly attention, but he offered me free post care babysitting from his wife. Now that's service!!
So after a follow up with a very nice, very old urologist yesterday..we, meaning he, decided to wait it out until Monday. So I will be taking plenty of vicodin (as needed of course) and medicine typically used for men with enlarged p*rostate....oh, and drinking lots and lots and lots of water. It's almost like being pregnant again...except that this "baby" won't be as cuddly. But maybe, just maybe, he'll grow up to be famous.

Okay I am sitting here seriously laughing out loud. Of course I am not laughing at your current health problem but laughing that at the names you are considering. And you piqued my abnormal curiosity and now I have to go and check out the pictures. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Okay I found this little little gem as I was looking at some very gross but informative information about said stone...here goes...I hope it helps!
A kidney stone
A thing so small
Is hardly worth a mention
Unless your trying to pass the things
They quickly get your attention
There is a cure
I promise you
That this is not a joke
Puree a bunch of asparagus
And chase with a liter of coke

One more thing before I go (I promise after this I won't post another word on the subject) I saw some picturs with were next to a word describing the pain level associated with having a kidney stone. Here are the adjectives...

Agony
Pain
Misery

I am curious to know what level of pain you are experiencing, just so I can get a visual of what you are up against.

Holy Moly!! I can't even imagine what that feels like. Is it equivalent to childbirth? I mean, you are trying to squeeze something large out of a tiny hole. Yikes! I am a little bummed that you aren't sharing the kidney stone with all of us. That would have been priceless! Good luck!

Emily...or should I say "Job" (think Biblical name...not employment). Really, I think it is someone else's turn to pick up a little of the slack and start suffering. You have done WAY more than your fair share. I would offer...but this really isn't a good week. You know, swim lessons, piano lessons, all that stuff. Please go on a cruise for a month and take life off for a few days. I am praying so hard for you!

Did you pass the booger? Chris had a kidney stone last winter and it was hell. So brutal. Call me.

You should have taken him up on the offer to drop off the kids. I threatened him with death if he forgot to offer. Maybe a threat with kidney stones would be effective?

Anyway, a friend once told me that passing kidney stones were WAY more painful than giving birth. But then I found out she had had an epidural, so I don't know if I can trust her opinion.

At least you are hilarious about it. We're still here, practically next door, if you need anything. I don't mind babysitting - even every day - for a nice change it isn't ME going through medical drama. Enjoy your high and next time you need a date, just call me.

I am so sorry Em! That sounds awful. I thought I was having a bad week, but now I am content with what I have!

Abby told me about this yesterday and said, "My sister Emily, I mean Job..." Very funny. I think you need to be done with medical things this year. You've gone over the quota!

Em, you give new meaning to the phrase 'rock out'. Good luck-this too shall pass! We love you!

I am sooo sorry! Can't they destroy it with lasers or something like that? Ugh! I am so sorry! You'll be in my prayers. At least you don't have to worry about working on your to-do list for a while!

Sorry to hear about your stone. The stories go down like birth stories, I think. It just makes me remember when you were so good to take me to the hospital and take Abe while I was there. Thanks for all you did for me. I'm glad you have good support right now. Good luck in the passing!

Why are you being so funny while you are in agony????? It must be the drugs. So let me know what my little grandstone looks like, okay?

Haha thats too bad! I have heard those are the worst thing ever. The funniest part of all though is that I happened to attend dinner and a Journey/Heart concert with Stone Phillips last night. What are the chances? He is actually super nice so I would vote for Rocky... Good luck :(

Ouch! I am so sorry. I hope everything passes quickly and you have no more pain for a really really long time. You have had your fair share.
