I am one of those citizens who has a quiet opinion. I don't like to talk politics, I don't like to debate...I don't even like watching the debates. But I feel passionately about some things, and defensive about some other things. My husband and I were flipping back and forth last night to a channel that had on a show about Conspiracy Theories of 9/11. Not only did the people sound like morons, but their theories bordered on ridiculous...the ridiculous side, not the almost ridiculous side. So it spurred a rare political conversation between my husband and me (he saves the rest of his "politically spurred" conversations for his Dad, brothers and Glenn Beck in the car.) He read me a portion of a speech given at a Naval Academy Graduation years ago that perfectly echoed how we both feel about certain issues. And since I don't care to use my own blog for political statements, go read his....it's really long but I think, really good and important....afterall, its our livelihood right now and we wouldn't be doing it if we didn't truly believe in it. We are undying patriots and proud to be so.
I have to admit that I can be fairly open minded and accepting of other's views and opinions. I have a talent for seeing where people are coming from even though I may not agree so feel free to disagree, I won't like you any less.

In response to whether or not service men and women are good role models:
Of course they are. If they are men and women of goodness and integrity, just like there are non-service men and women who are good role models. Supporting the military, being in the military or being a vetran are only a part of what defines a person.
Too many people in our country see war and peace, military and civilian, republican and democrat, etc., as such black and white issues. It is ridiculous. We live in a complicated world full of compromise and flawed people just doing the best they can.
I'm very interested in politics because I love the idea of America and the attempt that is made here to really give everyone a fair shake, even if it doesn't always quite work out that way. To me, the greatest thing about America is the dialogue--that people are free to have differences of opinion and to discuss this issues without fear of recrimnation or government coup. I think the terrible thing that is happening in our country now is that if somebody disagrees with the direction our leaders are taking then people supporting those leaders call the dissenters unAmercian. I don't think it is unAmerican to stand up and make your voice heard.
dito! i agree with you. i don't like to be all defensive and serious. i like to be happy and funny. i just don't find it interesting to talk about world issues. oh and i don't like it when adults fight or even disagree strongly, it makes me feel uncomfortable! lol
Amen! Another friend introduced me to the "loose change" theory. I am not a political person but come on!!! How could any reasonable person believe such nonesense? Do they not understand how illogical it is to say that our government completely orchastrated 911 so we could get our hands on some oil? How many people would that involve? It is hard for one person to keep a secret can you imagine thousands keeping a secret as big as that? Impossible!!! Okay I will be quiet. Thank you to all those men and women who protect us. Just on a side note though if you are ever looking for amusement google "loose change" and prepare yourself to be thoroughly entertained!
We were watching that very show the other night as well. It was so insane! I think people with that much time to sit around and think up that much crap would serve our country better if they would just get to work volunteering and helping solve the immediate problems right next door to them...in their neighborhoods, communities, etc. I'm tired of hearing all the talk...I'm ready to see some of those people get busy and "do the walk"!

Our conversations at home (minus with the girls) are always extremely political-- having grown up in a household that thrived on political debates over dinner-- I find I am probably too opinionated at times. I loved the wolf, sheep, sheepdog analogy. It was right on. People who believe that nonsense of 9/11 being orchestrated would do well to remember their history. In a similar vein, it is so insane that there are those today who deny that the holocaust even happened. If we pretend evil doesn't exist they think it will go away? That just gives it more power....anyway... Thanks to all you sheepdogs out there for all you do!! (and for the families that support the sacrifice:)

I appreciate so much the people who sacrifice for the cause of freedom, etc--even if it's not OUR freedom right now. We are in quite the pickle, as in bring the troops home now while it's "unfinished" or kill more...It can all get very gray and unpopular sometimes.
I actually try not to think that two of my brothers are training daily to be ready to respond to a threat. Maybe because the posibilities are hard for me to face, or maybe because if I just think they are "playing" at that defence game, then I can continue to live in my pretty world. I will never be able to give back all that has and will be given. But I hope I can live to deserve it.
So I finally get going on the whole bloging thing and the day I decide to contact you it just so happens that it is your birthday...so happy birthday Emily!
Yes, I remember those prego pics we took when we were younger, so funny now to see us all grown up with kids of our own. I still have that picture somewhere. Email me sometime, and stay in touch, it's so good to be in touch again.

I don't like war but recognize that it is necessary. I am so grateful to the men and women who are serving to protect us... and to their families for the sacrifice they make.
We listen to a lot of talk radio including Bill Bennett, former Secretary of Education and author of America:The Last Best Hope. My kids entire academic curriculum is based around the idea of America as a prophesied place set aside by God for a purpose.
My kids openly laugh in the face of people who say, "Fighting Never Solved Anything." Au contraire. Some things are worth fighting for.
Oh I love politics and I love our servicemen. I'm so so grateful to all those making sacrifices to protect us and to the families who supoprt them. I get all emotional when I think about the vets, military, all of it. My dad was a marine and spent his career recruiting for the Naval reactors facility. Do you sense my proudness?
I'm with you. Although I don't like debating and am pretty nonconfrontational, there are some things that are worth giving your opinion on, and this is one of them.
I don't think of myself as a big political debater; however, I do have strong feelings about freedoms and the protection of those freedoms.
