Typically the last day of school has me cringing just a tiny bit, kind of like if I were standing near a bat wielding toddler, my eyes closed and curled up in defense-just a tiny afraid. But it turns out being distracted by the fact that I am four days overdue made the last day of school fun!
I met the girls at the bus door to thank our delightfully kind bus driver for toting our kids around all year, and was totally surprised to see bawling child after bawling child descend the stairs. What the heck was wrong you ask? Why, they were sad that it was the last day of school!
I am not joking.
My 5th grader and 1st grader were the saddest of the crew. Mia and her friend couldn't stop crying. They were talking through the tears and it was making me laugh.
"Can you play today?" (sob sob)
"No, we're going to the pool..." (wahhhh!)
"Where is your beach ball?" (hiccup, cry...)
"In my backpack." (booo-hoooo!)
I kid you not, it sounded like this all the way to our neighbor's house where everyone had contributed to a delightful little ice cream party to welcome summer.
It was one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed.
In their defenses, they really had awesome teachers this year that we love and adore.
And their school is pretty awesome too. Haley said that all the teachers came outside and stood in a big line to wave good-bye to the buses.
And even though I really really wanted to have this baby just a little before school got out, I am excited to have them all home and do our summer thing.
In other news, Father's Day has arrived once again which means a custom order of Blue Bell all the way from Brenham, Texas, just for Clark. (I will spare you the part of the story where I naively ask Clark to explain some details about dry ice bombs...never assuming of course that he would make one that scares the neighbors into calling each other for 30 minutes trying to figure out who was shot.)
It is a happy thing to find on one's doorstep. Clark eats tiny little bowls each night to make it last. I know it's just ice cream, but it's a taste of home.
And it is quite creamy and delicious.
And in even better news, my little brother and his beautiful wife had their baby last week.
We are choosing to ignore the fact that she was due after me, and that her labor lasted 48 awful hours, and that they are all the way in Japan with the cutest baby girl ever born. I am so so super happy and excited. Little Hero is gorgeous and lucky to have such parents. It also makes me glad that I am not having a girl because she really just wouldn't be able to compete with this little baby.
So on to Father's Day and the depressing fact that I didn't think I would have to do much. I do love Father's Day, really and truly. I just thought that at this point I would have had a good excuse to not dote on the man with breakfast in bed and a delicious dinner. Oh well, I suppose I can make a little effort for the father of my children. :) He is pretty awesome.

Or maybe you will give him the best gift ever by having a baby boy ON Father's Day! Wouldn't that be great?
I remember when I had Lilli, 7 days, overdue! Being overdue in South Carolina was no fun, it was wayyyyyy too hot!
He will come, and it will be epic, I know it!
Oh - and where do you order custom Blue Bell ice cream??? I may just have to try it!
I love that your girls were so weepy on the last day of school--that's a good sign.
I am going crazy that this little boy has not made his appearance yet! I am constantly checking Facebook and my e mail for news. It's the first thing I do in the morning, when I walk in the door in the evening, and right before I go to bed. Sigh...trying to be patient. How do you stand it?
Maybe I should have gone to your kids' school in third grade instead of PMS....perhaps I wouldn't have cried in class every day--just leaving the last day.
That was very funny.
I'm trying so hard to distract myself from being impatient about your baby....but COME ON!!!
Also, explain to me why you feel as good as you do, so overdue. I am DYING! Hold on 11 more days and we can have twinners! (Please don't wait 11 more days.)
I love that your girls were crying. Seriously, my boys were doing flips and high fiving each other on the last day of school. I need to go to your school.
